Weir and Water Treatment System Inauguration Event

A groundwater extraction and treatment system, associated with the construction of Southern Nevada Water Authority’s erosion control structures (weirs), began January 2, 2018. Operation of the treatment system reduces perchlorate from entering the Las Vegas Wash, Lake Mead and the Colorado River.

NERT operates the extraction and treatment system to remove perchlorate from groundwater. Most of the perchlorate to be captured by this system originates from historic operations at the Kerr-McGee/Tronox site at the Black Mountain Industrial complex in Henderson, Nevada. NERT, the current owner of the former Kerr-McGee/Tronox site, is responsible for environmental remediation efforts at the site under the direction and oversight of the NDEP and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
