The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA) signed into law by President Obama on February 17th, 2009 includes measures to modernize our nation's infrastructure, enhance energy independence, expand educational opportunities, preserve and improve affordable health care, provide tax relief, and protect those in greatest need. ARRA is focused on quickly delivering assistance to "ready to go" projects with job creation and preservation a top priority.

The State of Nevada received $19.5 million in ARRA funds from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA) to help communities with drinking water infrastructure needs. These funds are providing needed support for arsenic treatment projects and other critical improvements to public water supply systems in Nevada.

Nevada also received $19.2 million in ARRA funds from US EPA to support local wastewater treatment infrastructure needs. These funds are helping many communities in Nevada with compliance issues to ensure safe collection and treatment of wastewater. Below are "summaries" for drinking water and cleanwater (wastewater) projects funded through ARRA "stimulus funds" allocated to Nevada*.

* The Recovery Act provides additional grant funding to States for their Drinking Water and Clean Water State Revolving loan fund programs. However, there are differences between the base SRF programs and the Recovery Act funding. The 20% State match requirement is waived by the Recovery Act. The Act specifies that each State use not less than 50% of its capitalization grants for additional subsidization "in the form of" principal forgiveness, negative interest loans, or grants targeting the subsidization on community affordability and that 20% of the funding be applied to "green" infrastructure projects. The Act also requires use of iron and steel that is made in the USA and applies Davis Bacon prevailing wage rates to projects funded in whole or in part by Recovery Act funds.
