April 12, 2007 News Release — NDEP Awardes Mercury Fugitive Emissions Contract — A University of Nevada researcher has been awarded a $250,000 contract to conduct a two-year research project to characterize mercury emissions to the atmosphere from areas of mining waste — "Mercury emissions from mine waste rock, heap leach and tailings areas have been the subject of much speculation and concern over the past few years," said Leo Drozdoff, administrator of NDEP. "We believe this research will provide sound scientific data to help answer many of the questions surrounding this issue."
March 2007 — NDEP's Water Quality Monitoring Webpage: NDEP obtains water quality samples that are analyzed for standard chemical parameters and metals, including total recoverable and dissolved mercury. The river, stream and lake water quality data are available on this webpage
January 2007 — Nevada Mercury Control Program - Briefing Document
January 2007 Program Update: USEPA has provided NDEP with an additional $34,000 to support continued operation of Nevada's rural Mercury Deposition Network (MDN). Grant funds will support the project through October 2008. The federal funds are a one time use of EPA dollars for the project. Of note, most MDN sites throughout the country are funded by sources other than EPA with states providing 45% , local groups 30%, National Park Service and USGS each 10% and industry 5%.

September 2006 — NDEP initiates a new program to control air emissions of mercury from coal-fired electric utility steam generating units. NDEP took this action in response to a federal requirement for states to control annual mercury emissions from coal-fired power plants. Read about the new program.

New York aims to clean waters of mercury —
ALBANY, N.Y. - The state Department of Environmental Conservation has issued a draft plan intended to cut smokestack mercury emissions to the point that all New York fish are safe to eat again. New York and six New England states — Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Vermont — are collaborating in an effort to prompt the federal government and other states to follow their lead.
