This website contains information about long term stewardship (LTS) activities being implemented across the U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) nuclear weapons complex..  The scope of surveillance and monitoring at DOE sites suggests that nearly 550,000 acres of land are expected to require long-term stewardship.   DOE's LTS activities will include maintaining controls and/or monitoring for:
  • Contaminated groundwater at 80 sites
  • Vaults, tanks, and radioactive hazardous landfills at 63 sites
  • Contaminated soils at 25 sites
  • Contaminated facilities at 13 sites
  • Contaminated surface water or sediment at nine sites.
Long-Term Stewardship of contaminated federal and non-federal lands must be addressed to safeguard human health and the environment for generations to come.  To this end, the goal of this website is to foster development of a national policy for long-term stewardship.

Primary users of this website include members of the National Governors' Association (NGA) Federal Facilities Task Force.  Other potential users include governor's staff; state environmental officials; consultants; members of DOE sponsored federal advisory boards; and others involved in policy development and regulatory oversight of DOE contaminated media and infrastructure.

The NGA Federal Facilities Task Force has formed a Long-Term Stewardship committee.  Committee members and members of the Task force are encouraged to submit LTS information for posting on this website.  Information will be posted to the What's New page and thereafter moved to other pages on the site.
