DOE's Long-Term Stewardship Internet Information Center   This website is a tool of the DOE long-term Stewardship Working Group for providing long-term stewardship information to the public.  The website provides news and information concerning DOE's long-term stewardship activities, including the long-term stewardship study, NDAA Report to congress, other complex-wide and site-sepcific reports and workshops, and site-specific perspectives on long-term stewardship.

U.S. Department of Energy, Grand Junction Office -- LTSM Website.  Many of the missions conducted by DOE have resulted in low-level radioactive contamination at DOE sites. These sites were remediated under different environmental restoration programs, each with its own regulations and standards. DOE created the Long-Term Surveillance and Maintenance (LTSM) Program in 1988 to provide for the long-term care and maintenance of the various disposal sites. Currently, the LTSM Program is responsible for annual surveillance, monitoring, and maintenance of 25 disposal sites assigned to DOE under Title I and Title II of the Uranium Mill Tailings Radiation Control Act (UMTRCA).   The missions of the LTSM program is to Fulfill DOE’s responsibility to implement all activities necessary to ensure regulatory compliance and to protect the public and the environment from long-lived wastes associated with the nation’s nuclear energy, weapons, and research activities

DOEs Draft Long-Term Stewardship Study.  The study has been released for public review.  The Study was prepared in accordance with the terms of a 1998 Settlement Agreement that resolved a lawsuit brought against DOE by the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) and other plaintiffs.  The Draft LTS Study examines the institutional and programmatic issues facing DOE as it completes the environmental cleanup program at its sites.

Link to Sites Database Maintained By the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE/EM)   The Sites Database is being developed, in cooperation with other Federal agencies, to facilitate public access to existing Federal information on a variety of sites (many associated with nuclear weapons or nuclear energy research activities, as well as government-owned sites) where work involved, or may have involved, radioactive materials. This information is being made available to help the public better understand the role of facilities involved in nuclear weapons and nuclear energy research activities and the nature of the residual contamination for which the federal government may have some responsibility. The database also identifies facilities at which the department's workers may be covered by newly established programs.

DOE PEIS Lawsuit - Settlement News  This site provides news and information about the implementation of the December 12, 1998, Programmatic Environmental Impact Statement Settlement Agreement between DOE and the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC et. al. v. Richardson, No.97-936(SS)(AK)).  The latest status on achieving each of the three major elements of the settlement agreement is provided on this website (i.e., Database, National Stewardship Study, and Citizens Monitoring and Technical Assistance Funding)

FY 2000 National Defense Authorization Act Long-term Stewardship Report.  The Department of Energy (DOE) is currently developing a report on the Department's Long-term Stewardship (LTS) responsibilities in response to the Congressional mandate in the FY 2000 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA). The NDAA requires that the DOE:
Identify sites or portions of sites where environmental restoration, waste disposal, and facility stabilization will be completed by 2006 without unrestricted land use, and

Include sufficient detail to undertake the necessary management and stewardship responsibilities including cost, scope, and schedule.

Lasting Legacy  This website offers an interactive presentation that explains the Department of Energy's production, waste, and stewardship across the nuclear weapons complex over time.

Accelerating Cleanup: Paths to Closure -- June 1998  The publication provides a a site-by-site, project-by-project projection for the technical scope, cost, and schedule required to complete the Department of Energy's remaining cleanup sites in the United States.
