Multi-School Carson River
Education Project

What is this Multi-School Carson River Project?

This project will facilitate the exchange of water-quality data that has been, and is presently being, collected by students from schools as part of their studies of the Carson River.

Nevada Division of Environmental Protection (NDEP) staff who participated in the Nevada State Science Teachers Conference in Lovelock, NV, October 20, 2000 learned that several educational programs support the collection of water-quality data along the Carson River, yet did not have the benefit of data exchange between similar programs or other sites where samples have been collected. Science instructors express a need to SHARE the data and compare student-monitoring efforts between different programs and sites.

Students are collecting water quality and bio-assessment data from the Carson River. By coordinating the programs, NDEP hopes to promote a stronger sense of watershed stewardship and continue student involvement in studies of the Carson River. This collection of data can contribute to baseline watershed data for the Carson River Basin and aid resource management agencies and local community groups as well as develop a tremendous sense of environmental awareness.

Student-volunteer monitoring can make a difference. This is an opportunity to expand watershed management education to community members and student scientists alike. Future Features for this page will include a glossary of the constituents that are being sampled such as ph, phosphorous, total nitrogen, and a greater understanding of the physical, chemical and biological characteristics of the Carson River.
