HWAAP-I09 & I10 BUILDING 49-10 PIT LANDFILL #1 & #2
SITE DESCRIPTION
HWAAP-I09 & I10 are two open pits near an area used to assemble ship mines, bombs, and torpedo warheads. The period of operations is not documented. Wastewater and wash down water were reportedly discharged to these pits. Investigation in 1994 included 10 soil gas samples, 6 surface soil samples, and 15 subsurface soil samples collected from 3 borings to a depth of 56 feet. Three cone penetrometer soundings were advanced for a total of 106 feet to define the optimum depth to collect subsurface soils. The surface soil samples contained up to 1,260 mg/kg of TPH-d with elevated concentrations of metals (130 mg/kg of lead). Groundwater sampling showed hits of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Sewer line breakage was thought to be the source, but in 1999, sewer lines were investigated and the findings eliminated potential release points. Remedial design in 2000 included soil gas surveys to define the groundwater plume and development of site specific natural attenuation criteria. Two additional wells were installed in 2002 to evaluate the TCE in groundwater. TCE (270 ppb) was found above action levels.
PROPOSED PLAN
Investigation of TCE contamination in groundwater at SWMU I09/10 will continue in FY2011.
