HWAAP-B22B BUILDING 101-44 CATCHMENT PIT
SITE DESCRIPTION
HWAAP-B22B is an inactive unlined surface impoundment pit located northwest of Building 101-44 and east of HWAAP-B22B. The pit measures 45 by 30 by 6 feet. The impoundment is partially eroded and partially filled with windblown sand. A large pile of dredged soil is located on the north side of the impoundment. This impoundment operated from 1940 to the early 1970's and received large amounts of waste water containing TNT and RDX. Remedial Investigation work in 1994 included surface soil and hand auger sampling, and cone penetrometer soundings. One surface soil sample, one hand auger sample and two cone penetrometer soil samples were collected and analyzed for explosives and metals. Only low concentrations of explosives and metals were detected in soil samples collected. There has been no impact to the groundwater from metals or explosives at this site, no remediation of the groundwater is recommended. The site was reassessed in 1999 with improved sampling and analytical techniques.
