HWAAP-A11 MAGAZINE 18-5 DISPOSAL PIT
SITE DESCRIPTION
HWAAP-A11 is an open unlined pit approximately 300'x100'x15', located next to Magazine 18-AT-5 near the Mustard Gas Disposal Area (HWAAP-A05), used for the disposal of pyrotechnics, explosives, propellants, metal, ammunition boxes and other waste by open burning. The period of operation is unknown. The SI activities completed in 1994 included ground-penetrating radar and magnetometry surveys on a 10-foot grid and the collection and analyses of 3 near surface soil samples. The soil samples contained up to 10 mg/kg of hydrocarbons based on field screening analyses. Due to the extensive health and safety requirements for conducting work at this site which were beyond the scope of the previous task order, this site has not been fully investigated.
The site was closed with the following restrictions: the disposal pit should be backfilled to above grade with a slight crown to facilitate drainage, no excavation will be allowed in the vicinity of the former pit, and no trenches will be dug through the former pit.
PROPOSED PLAN
A Closure Decision Document was approved by the NDEP in January 2002.
