Living organisms are the most direct and effective measure of a stream's water quality. At the Benthic Bugs station, students examined the insect communities that live in the Carson River and learned to identify macroinvertebrates that are most likely to live in streams with "good" water quality verses those that characterize "poor" water quality.

Ground water supplies most of the drinking water in the Carson River Basin. Preventing contaminents from entering the water supply is everyone's responsibility. At this station, students built a 3-D model "earth window" to study aquifer characteristics and the principals of ground water flow. They learned how soils and groundwater systems could easily become contaminated, and that remediation is difficult and expensive.
