Truckee River Water Quality Standards Review Back BWQP Home Page

The Bureau of Water Quality Planning of the Nevada Division of Environmental Protection (NDEP) has begun a review of the Truckee River water quality standards contained in Nevada Administrative Code 445A.1682 through 445A.1694. The current standards were last updated in 1993 and a new review is deemed appropriate. In the past 20 years, there have been significant developments which would warrant the standards review. Considerations include changes in the river management, increased understanding of the river dynamics, and establishment of water quality standards by the Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe. Additionally, the Cities of Reno and Sparks, Truckee Meadows Water Reclamation Facility (TMWRF), Washoe County, Truckee Meadows Water Authority (TMWA) are pursuing a 3rd party review of the existing nutrient TMDL (Total Maximum Daily Loads) which defines the allowable nutrient loads to the Truckee River. NDEP promotes the review of water quality standards prior to the development or review of any TMDL, as appropriate.

With oversight from NDEP and EPA, the Cities of Reno and Sparks, TMWRF, Washoe County, TMWA have been leading a third-party review of the nutrient water quality standards. The results of the third-party effort will be used by NDEP in a review of all the Truckee River standards. The third-parties have generated information to date in support of the nutrient standards and TMDL review.
