Water Quality Trading

The concept of water quality trading has emerged as an innovative approach to develop more cost effective solutions to water quality problems in a watershed. Trading is a method to attain and/or maintain water quality standards, by providing opportunities to reduce pollutant loading in a way that maximizes water quality, ecological improvements and economic benefit. In Nevada, water quality trading is currently being implemented among the point sources which discharge to Las Vegas Wash and the Truckee River.

Over the next couple of years, further opportunities for trading in the Truckee River watershed will be investigated. Before trading can occur, pollution sources must be accounted for and their behavior understood.
