Nonpoint Source Implementation Projects

Humboldt River Basin

Alternative Grazing Strategies
UNR - Cooperative Extension
To construct shading structures to provide an alternative loafing area for cattle, instead of staying in the riparian zone. If successful, this can improve water quality and riparian areas.

Central Nevada Rangeland Restoration
Twenty to One
To restore springs and riparian drains in Douglas Canyon and increase native perennial grasses in upland range habitat.

Dixie Creeek Riparian Restoration Plan
Jiggs Conservation District
To construct fences to protect Dixie Creek from cattle, and to construct off-site watering facilities to compensate for the loss of access to the creek.

Domestic Well Water and Public Education
UNR - Department of Civil Engineering
To use existing data and gather additional data to assess the ground water quality in suburban/rural Winnemucca.

Hot Springs Ranch Range and Riparian Enhancement
Jose Talancon - Ranch Owner
To remove cattle from the creek, by fencing the riparian area; construction of off-site cattle watering facilities, development of wells, and discking, tilling and revegetating the range. This should help control erosion and sediment loading into the Little Humboldt.

Mining Best Management Practices
Desert Research Institute
To evaluate the effectiveness of implementing best management practices to control NPS pollution from mine sites.

Nonpoint Source Public Information/Public Participation
City of Elko
To involve and educate the public and business community in preventing/minimizing NPS pollution from entering the stormwater system of Elko, which drains to the Humboldt River.

Pine Creek Water Quality Project
Eureka Conservation District
To install fences, water control structures, grazing systems, livestock watering systems, to increase efficiency of livestock and water management, and to improve riparian zones and water quality.

Range and Hayland Rehabilitation
Northeast Elko Conservation District
To purchase a no-till drill and transport trailer which will allow interseeding of rangeland and hayland with perennial grass seed mix. Increasing the perennial grass cover will reduce erosion and sediment yield and improve water quality.

South Fork Water Quality Project
Jiggs Conservation District
To purchase a seed drill for use in revegetation projects to reduce erosion in the South Fork Humboldt Watershed.

Starr Valley Vegetation Renovation Project
Starr Valley Conservation District
To use an aerator/seeder to renovate vegetative ground cover on rangeland, hayland and pastures. This will control erosion and sediment loading.

Subsurface Drip Irrigation of Alfalfa in Nevada
UNR - Cooperative Extension
A study to determine the feasibility of using the slow frequent application of water to the soil to grow alfalfa in Nevada. Research in other states has shown that this method can use water more efficiently.

Treating Sodic Soils and Irrigation Water with Gypsum
UNR - Cooperative Extension
To research the effectiveness of solution grade gypsum on alkaline soils to minimize NPS pollution.

Upper Adams Slough Erosion Control Project
Paradise - Sonoma Conservation District
To stabilize eroding streambanks, improve water quality and enhance habitat.
