BWQP receives federal funds from theU.S. EPA which are passed through the Nonpoint Source Program and awarded annually on a competitive basis. Projects eligible for funding include activities which reduce, eliminate and/or prevent nonpoint source (NPS) pollution through the implementation of best management practices (BMPs) for sources such as, but not limited to, agricultural drainage and/or runoff (includes irrigation, grazing, dairies, etc.), mine drainage, physical habitat alteration, channel erosion, sedimentation due to construction and land development, hydrologic modification, dredging, silvicultural practices, septic systems and urban runoff.

In addition to the implementation of BMPs, other eligible NPS activities include technology transfer, innovative methods or practices, ground water protection, pollution prevention, technical assistance and public education. Comprehensive watershed management projects are also eligible for funding. A one-to-one non-federal match of grant funds is required.
