Nonpoint Source Implementation Projects

Carson River Basin

Acid Mine Drainage Treatment
UNR - Center for Environmental Sciences and Engineering

To design, construct, operate and monitor a passive biological system for treatment of acidic mine drainage, which will substantially reduce toxic heavy metals concentrations as well as arsenic and aluminum.

Developing TMDLs for the Carson River
UNR - Environmental and Resource Sciences

To analyze water quality data and develop an integrated water quality model to be used to assign Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) values for the Carson River. The water quality modelling project was undertaken to modify the WASP4 modelling system, to allow for the simulation of attached algae.

Genoa Well Testing
UNR - Department of Agricultural Economics

To assess the water quality of private wells in Genoa as influenced by individual septic systems; to provide educational material and potential management strategies to the community.

Irrigation with Drainwater for Ecological Risk Reduction
UNR - Environmental and Resource Sciences

A research project to demonstrate that, for the Newlands Project, irrigation with drainwater could be more protective of the wetlands, while not adversely impacting agriculture.

Lower Carson River Comprehensive Resource Management Plan
Lahontan Conservation District

To develop a comprehensive restoration plan, improve and restore the lower Carson River to a healthy desert river environment, and achieve better water quality.

Martin Slough Water Quality Enhancement
Towns of Gardnerville and Minden

To design and construct two wetland areas at Gilman Avenue to improve (decrease) flow and provide sediment capture. The wetlands will provide stormwater treatment, better water filtration, and as a consequence, better water quality in the slough and better fish and wildlife habitat.

Middle Carson River Ecological Restoration Project
Mason Valley Conservation District

To develop a Comprehensive Resource Management Plan (CRMP), implement BMPs to control sediment loading, re-establish riparian vegetation, and stabilize stream banks to the Carson River between Dayton and Weeks.

Rotational Crops for Soil Nitrate Remediation
UNR - Cooperative Extension

To examine the effectiveness of rotational crops as a means to remove nitrogen from soil in areas with a shallow ground water table.

Tall Whitetop Control
Lahontan Conservation District

To stop investation of riparian areas in the Lower Carons River by the noxious weed Tall Whitetop.

Tall Whitetop Control on the Carson River Watershed
Carson Water Subconservancy District

The objective of this project is to control the infestation of Tall Whitetop (Lepidium latifolium) within the Carson River Watershed. The infestation degrades the water quality because stream banks become unstable and erode, contributing sediment loading. It displaces other native species which provide better shade, and consequently lower temperature and more dissolved oxygen.

Upper Carson River Management Plan
Carson Valley Conservation District

To develop a comprehensive watershed management plan for the Upper Carson River hydrographic basin.

Upper Carson River Workplan
Carson Valley Conservation District

To implement a coordinated watershed plan, through river restoration projects, including bank stabilization.

Virginia and Rocky Diversion Levee Reclamation
Carson Valley Resource Conservation District

To remove sediment, stabilize the Carson River banks with excavated materials and rock rip-rap, revegetate and enhance riparian vegetation.

Water Canyon Water Quality Enhancement
Washoe Tribe of Nevada and California

To improve the riparian area of the Water Canyon Creek by constructing fence on the east side of the creek, constructing off-site watering facilities and plant native species of willow, cottonwood and herbaceous species.
