The State is required to complete Nonpoint Source Assessment Reports under the Clean Water Act, Section 319. Nonpoint Source Assessment Reports:

  • Identify water bodies that are not likely to meet water quality standards or goals;

  • Identify particular nonpoint sources or categories of sources that are contibuting significant pollution to the waterbodies identified above;

  • Identify best management practices and other measures to control each category of nonpoint sources identified above; and

  • Identify and describe State and local programs for controlling nonpoint sources of pollution.

The Nonpoint Source Assessment Report, prepared in 1989, is currently being updated. BWQP is planning to complete draft Nonpoint Source Assessments for the Humboldt Basin and the Walker Basin by June 30, 1999. The assessment reports will be made available to the public for review and comment. Once finalized, they will be used by State and local agencies to help with comprehensive efforts to control nonpoint sources of pollution.
