Summary
This site was initially a 10-acre landfill for White Pine County during the early 1900's. The county discontinued use around 1950. The site was unsecured and unauthorized use continued and led to further surface contamination. In 1995, this was brought to the county's attention and they began seeking funding to either reclaim or properly cap the landfill.
In October 2004, an application for brownfields funding was submitted and approved. The site was then assessed and plans were made accordingly to secure the site and cap the landfill. The 10-acre plot was split up into two 5-acre sections. Waste from the site was consolidated and properly capped in one 5-acre section. Following the completion of the cap, a chain link fence was constructed to prevent further unauthorized use. The remaining 5-acre portion cleanup was completed, and grass seed spread to begin vegetative re-growth. This project was closed in July 2007. White Pine County intends to sell the clean parcel to generate funding for the county and maintain the remaining parcel as county land.
