Summary
Belaustegui Park served as a railroad loading yard for many years, though it has been vacant since Lander County acquired it in February 2000. The county is developing the site into a gateway park for the City of Battle Mountain.
During initial evaluation, a Phase I was completed on the site and determined that the soil had been contaminated with barium and in select areas, petroleum products. A Tier II analysis was performed, in which 3 wells were drilled to monitor and test groundwater, and soil samples were taken and analyzed for barium and oil.
The results showed that the oil contamination was extremely limited and the barium was not affecting the groundwater. Plans were then made to cap the site with a 1 foot layer of clean soil. This soil was used as the base for the park, and in it several concrete pads were created for parking and picnic benches. Following these actions, the project was closed in October 2006.
