Summary
This site consists of a single building on Avenue E in Gabbs, Nevada. This building was built some time during the 1940's and moved to the site during the 1950's. During a Phase I investigation completed in July of 2003, it was noted that there are significant chemical hazards within the building. These hazards included asbestos in many of the building materials, mercury in thermostat switches, polychlorinated biphenyls in fluorescent light ballasts, and lead based paints. Currently the building is not safe for occupancy due to structural weakening from fire and windstorms.
The site was awarded funding in December 2006 to have the full extent of the chemical hazards evaluated and removed. The evaluation was completed, and the asbestos and other hazards were removed in December of 2007. Nye County, along with the town of Gabbs, plan to build a new community center to replace the former recreation hall.
