Summary
This site is a former gravel mine that was established in the 1950's, and operated until 2001. During a risk assessment in 2001, the site's groundwater and surface water was found to be contaminated by perchlorate from two local ammonium perchlorate production plants.
Ammonium perchlorate is a powerful oxidizer used in solid rocket propellants and many pyrotechnics. The perchlorate concentrations were sampled quarterly for a year and were found to be decreasing. When these quarterly samples are compared with the original risk assessment in 2000 and the second assessment in early 2005, it is shown that the perchlorate level is steadily decreasing.
The site is ready for redevelopment with some limitations.
